About this Interview
John Calpin discusses his education and early career with the Philadelphia Bulletin as a police reporter. He describes his shift from a police reporter to bureau chief and the scandals and stories he recalls. He worked closely with political members at city hall and learned the functioning of government through his time in the press. He recalls working with mayors Joseph Clark and Richardson Dilworth along with the whole of the Philadelphia Democratic City Committee.
Biographical / Historical Note
Walter M. Phillips, Sr. (1912-1985) was active in Philadelphia civic and political life for over thirty years. He worked and volunteered in a variety of city and regional organizations. After retiring, Phillips initiated an oral history project, interviewing in the 1970s many individuals with whom he had worked.
