About this Interview
Peter J. Camiel, prior state senator, discusses his career in Philadelphia politics. Camiel speaks about his beginnings during Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program. He explains issues and programs he conducted such as a narcotic commission that worked with narcotic education, treatment, and prevention. Camiel covers his relationship with Frank Rizzo, former Police Commissioner and Philadelphia Mayor, and their tribulations including attempted bribery, false accusations, excoriation, and unknown surveillance of Camiel and his family. He further covers his election campaigns for ward leader of the 11th ward and state senator.
Biographical / Historical Note
Walter M. Phillips, Sr. (1912-1985) was active in Philadelphia civic and political life for over thirty years. He worked and volunteered in a variety of city and regional organizations. After retiring, Phillips initiated an oral history project, interviewing in the 1970s many individuals with whom he had worked.
