About this Interview

Arthur C. Kaufmann, the former head of McCreery's in Pittsburgh and of Gimbel's in Philadelphia, discusses his professional experiences in retail. Kaufmann served as Executive Head of McCreery's for six years until he went to Gimbels in May 1934 to be its Executive Head. He also became Vice President and Director of the parent company, Gimbel Brothers, New York when he went to Philadelphia. Frank Lloyd Wright built "Falling Waters" for his cousin, Edgar J. Kaufmann. Arthur Kaufmann later worked with Oskar Stonorov to organized the Frank Lloyd Wright Exhibition for the State Department that was shown in Philadelphia and then Italy. He also helped organize the Better Philadelphia Exhibition Corporation, which took over 55,000 square feet of space in Gimbels and drew an audience of 400,000 visitors over four weeks.

Biographical / Historical Note

Walter M. Phillips, Sr. (1912-1985) was active in Philadelphia civic and political life for over thirty years. He worked and volunteered in a variety of city and regional organizations. After retiring, Phillips initiated an oral history project, interviewing in the 1970s many individuals with whom he had worked.
